What Is PDRN? The Korean Skincare Ingredient Explained

If you follow Korean skincare, you will have seen PDRN on more and more labels. It started life in Korean aesthetic clinics and has made its way into serums, creams and sheet masks. Here is what it actually is.

What does PDRN stand for?

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide: fragments of DNA, most commonly extracted from salmon. You may also see it listed as sodium DNA. It is sometimes nicknamed the "salmon DNA" ingredient.

Why is PDRN popular in Korea?

In Korea, PDRN has been used for years in professional treatments, where it is associated with skin repair and recovery. That clinical reputation is a big part of why it has become a sought-after ingredient in everyday skincare.

What does topical PDRN do?

In creams, serums and masks, PDRN is used as a conditioning ingredient alongside hydrators and soothing actives. Most published research has focused on professional and medical use rather than on products applied to the skin at home, so it is best thought of as one part of a well-formulated product, not a miracle ingredient on its own. Look for PDRN paired with proven hydrators such as hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting ceramides.

Who is PDRN suitable for?

PDRN formulas are generally gentle and suit most skin types, including dry and dehydrated skin. If you have a fish allergy or follow a vegan lifestyle, check the source of the PDRN, as it is usually derived from salmon.
