Korean Sunscreen: Why K-Beauty SPF Feels Different

Ask any K-beauty fan for their holy-grail product and many will name a Korean sunscreen. Daily SPF is the cornerstone of Korean skincare, and Korean formulas are known for feeling more like a light moisturiser than a traditional sun cream.

Why Korean sunscreens feel different

Because SPF is worn every day in Korea, regardless of weather, formulas are designed to be pleasant enough to use daily: thin, fluid textures, quick absorption, minimal white cast and finishes that sit well under make-up.

What does PA+++ mean?

SPF measures protection against UVB, the rays mainly responsible for burning. The PA rating, used in Korea and Japan, indicates protection against UVA, the rays linked to skin ageing. It runs from PA+ to PA++++, with more plus signs meaning more UVA protection.

In the UK you will more often see a UVA star rating or the UVA circle logo, which shows the UVA protection meets the EU recommended standard relative to the SPF. The systems are different, but all are telling you about UVA protection.

Do you need SPF in the UK?

Yes. UVA is present all year round, even on cloudy days, and passes through windows. That is why dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum SPF every morning as the last step of your routine, reapplied when you are outdoors for long periods.

How to wear a Korean SPF

  1. Apply after your moisturiser, as the final step of your morning routine.
  2. Use a generous amount: around two finger-lengths for face and neck.
  3. Let it set for a minute before make-up.
  4. Reapply through the day when outdoors.

Clabiane SPF 50 Daily Shield is a lightweight SPF 50+ PA+++ fluid with no white cast, designed for daily wear. Explore more in our Korean skincare collection.
